Where is the light? Some people would take the literal approach and say wherever there is a light source. Others would say it’s where the happiness is, and where the people are. Though if there is light there must also be dark. So what is the dark? Most would say the dark is a scary place where there is no light and where no person would want to be. Though what if the dark had happiness and beauty just as the light does, would people accept the dark as it is? This analogy of light and dark is how Netanel Ofek described the north, the south and the center of Israel.
The light of Israel is a spot between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, the center of the country. This light is where most of the citizens of Israel live, 75 percent of the population. The north and the south, is where the other 25 percent of the population resides. The “dark” of Israel. A place where people in the light question the sanity of people who move to Golan, or Sderot. Asking themselves, “why would a person move to a place where there is nothing to do, no jobs to be found?” This question could be answered by Shimon Peres, a president of Israel and a supporter of the movement to the north and south of Israel. His answer to the people in the light was, ” in a place where there is nothing, you can do anything” ( Peres). This is a Zionist view, the view of a person who believes that although there may not be a lot in the dark, that just gives you the chance to be the first, to create these new things. The dark is a beautiful place and if people are willing to put the fear behind them, they can find the light.
