Preparing for the Shabbat is no easy task. Starting a day before, the cooking begins and the smells in the air are intoxicating. The Miyara household was delighted that I was staying with them for Shabbat. They were so happy that I was there to eat all of their food! By the time I had arrived at their home, most of the food close to completion. The floor was covered in pots filled with an assortment of foods, such as chicken, meats and potatoes. Yakov, the male figurehead was over the moon that he had someone to help him bake the bread. He led me outside where a huge, shiny pot lay open filled with dough that was baking. Instructing his daughter, Tal, to photograph my first baking adventure, he showed me how to place the dough inside the pot where it would bake for five minutes. I have never tasted more delicious bread in my entire life. Fish in the oven, bread baking outside and a family full of helping hands. For the Shabbat, everyone helps out because it is a family affair. All of the Miyara clan spends Shabbat together. In preparation for their arrival, the table is set, the dishes are completed and the guests are awakened from their naps. Although I did sleep through most of the preparation, the intense family connection was not lost on me. Through their Judaism and observance of Shabbat, the Miyara family remain close and bonded together.
