Days 6-7 (6.24-25.16): My first Shabbat on a kibbutz by Hannah Cutrona

I never though that I would be feeding cows in Israel. We started our Shabbat morning by being awakened by our three friends yelling ” Boker Tov” at 11:00 a.m. Noa, Bar and I quickly got up and started our day. All of us sat down at the table in Bar’s kitchen and ate Ben and Jerry’s ice cream for breakfast. After we cleaned up we walked to the farm on the kibbutz. They had cows, turkeys, lambs , and chickens. It was really hot on Saturday – around 108F – so after we finished feeding the animals we all took a long nap.

When I woke up from my nap I realized I could see a wind farm from my window. Bar took us to see them on the kibbutz. We saw 7 wind turbines. Once you got close to them you could feel all the wind that they let off as they spun around. Each turbine had its own small poem or song about wind printed on it in Hebrew. We were informed that they are also building a visitors center for this wind farm. It will be a coffee shop and will have information about how the wind farm is helping Israel save money and convert the wind power into energy. To wrap up the whole weekend we had havdalah with her family and friends. Her family also had an IDF soldier over. This part really impressed me because I really want to join the IDF when I graduate. The soldier gave me an inside point of view on what it’s like for someone to be in the IDF who does not have any family living in Israel. Overall this was a great way to spend my first Shabbat on a kibbutz, and I learned so much about Shabbat in the holy land.
