Days 1 and 2 (6.14-15.15): Interviews at the Philly Airport by Hannah Caplin

Today while the group was in the Philadelphia airport waiting to go to Tel Aviv we were assigned to go up to random people in the airport and interview them. Our questions were mostly about Israel’s water and how Israelis are making use of it. When we went up to the first person he had no clue about Israel and he said,”Honestly I don’t even know where Israel is on the map”. And for all of the questions we asked he had no clue. I was surprised that he didn’t even mention the Dead Sea, I thought everyone knew about it. I thought that showed how no one is being informed about what is going on in Israel. The second person knew a little bit more of what was going on, she talked about how she knew there were purifiers, and Israel is where the purifiers were from. The third was actually curious about Israel and asked us a few questions afterwards. And the last was an older couple, a librarian and teacher. They seemed the most informed about the questions. The couple was able to have a conversation with us about more than just water. And what I thought was interesting was the man said, I think that it would be easier to resolve  the water issues was if the state of Israel could be at peace, which carried onto more conversation. But overall the three other people we asked really had no clue about water surrounding Israel, or that there even was a water problem. I liked that how after we interviewed each person about the freshwater situation in Israel, we clarified what really was happening and most of them were interested except for the first person that had no clue where Israel even was. I liked hearing how much people knew and didn’t know about Israel in general. We had a wide range in people and how they answered. Thinking about the questions myself, I don’t know perfect answers for all of the questions. I think the purpose of the interviews was to see how much people actually knew, which for my group wasn’t very much.
