The Old City and the Western Wall by Meir Bickart

Today (Sunday the 16th) we explored both the more modern and more ancient aspects of the “Old City”. I think a very important message from our guide Benji Davis was that the Old City, unlike other historical sites, is not just a sightseeing experience that is only relevant for its history. The Old City and the Western Wall hold a cultural significance even to modern day Judaism. Due to October 7th I think some members of our group were a little worried that the Western Wall may have been damaged spiritually, however I would say the opposite happened as people seemed to be equally if not more connected to god and Jerusalem. Along with the praying there was also the common argument on the holiness of chocolate milk and ruggaluch coming from the orthodox men, which was a nice reminder of the ridiculous nature of the site and the people that come to it. This was however somewhat needed in times like these, and the fact that Israel can feel alive even through the toughest of times is a testament to the connection the Jewish people have. Israel’s holiness comes not just from its sites but from the people who have a commitment to the land and its people.
