Jewish Summer Version

This series is a chance to choose your own adventure – the arts, STEM, and music are all at your fingertips this summer! Find the Jewish links to all of your favorite activities.

We Are the Jews

The Forward answers this question: How are Jewish Teens using TikTok? An eye-rolling girl gives a tour of her parents’ mezuza collection, a boy in a hoodie reenacts the ancient conquests of Jerusalem with reality TV dialogue, and a girl and her mom bicker over an Israeli soap opera they call “Schnitzel.” Express what is Jewish to you with Tik Tok.

Collaging

Unleash your inner artist and collage your story using things around your home. Create a visual representation from an assembly of different forms and materials - magazine and newspaper clippings, ribbons, paint, bits of colored or handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects.

Rap it Up! Or It’s a Rap

Get out of your comfort zone and learn to write and perform your own amazing rap. Not your thing, how about creating your own Spoken Word or Slam Poetry? If you like to write and perform this course will give you many outlets to express yourself during this unique time.

You Be the Designer

Do you like to draw and create your own fashions? What about making your own jewelry? Have fun creating your own line of clothing (just on paper) to share with others who enjoy this too. You can also create your own jewelry collection using wire and beads to wear and share with family and friends.

There’s a Trick Up My Sleeve

Who doesn’t like a good magic trick or card trick? Learn some magic, have fun with learning some card tricks and maybe even create your own tricks too.

Stop It

Have you ever wanted to create your very own stop motion video? Brainstorm ideas and then learn how to create a story board for your movie. What props will you need, what scenery will you create? Learn how to use your phone and a stop motion app to make your vision come to life.

Potions Class and More

Do you love to experiment, is there a mad scientist lurking inside of you? Join us and have some fun with science! Create some slime, make your very own lip gloss, create a real volcano in your kitchen. Work with items found in your home to create a unique invention out of your imagination.

Harry Potter and Jewish Values

It’s official – there is a Jewish wizard at Hogwarts! Astute readers of the Harry Potter series have long suspected Harry’s friend and ally Anthony Goldstein might be Jewish. Now author JK Rowling has confirmed the matter, tweeting “Anthony Goldstein. Ravenclaw. Jewish wizard.” The next day Ms. Rowling suggested the possibility of a minyan at Hogwarts: “Anthony isn’t the first Jewish student, nor is he the only one. I just have reasons for knowing most about him!” The major characters in Harry Potter often reflect core Jewish values. Let’s explore them!
