The Jewish Education Center of Cleveland and @akiva are proud to launch J2Gether Jr. – an opportunity for Cleveland’s 3 – 7th graders* to spend their summers exploring the Jewish + Israel topics of their choice  with specially trained high schoolers as mentors. This experiential, socially distant summer camp alternative is a chance to learn in a small group or 1:1, focusing on your choice of content – food/cooking, music, or outdoor adventures, all with a Jewish twist!

Israel and Hebrew

This series will focus on Israel, its history, society, culture, challenges, relationship to the diaspora Jews and the commotion to the Cleveland community.

Hebrew

Have you ever wanted to learn Hebrew? Study spoken Hebrew at your own pace, and learn how to communicate with Israelis and Jews from around the world. This isn't your typical language class - it's designed around your interests, and will have you speaking Hebrew from the first day!

Israeli Dancing

This is your chance to look at Israel and the Israeli-Arab Conflict through the lens of global politics. Think about how water, oil, and other natural resources impact the modern Middle East, and how Israel's conflicts with its neighbors are part of the larger story of global events.

Israeli in My Ears: Music as a Window into Israeli Society

Using songs as lenses into Israeli culture and values, you'll learn some of the most iconic verses from Israeli folk songs, as well as modern rap, pop, and hip hop. What can you learn about a society through its greatest hits - and what do they mean to you? *No musical talent is required for this class. 

Krav Maga

Are you ready to kick it into high gear? In this interactive series, learn the foundations of self defense in a technique developed by the Israeli Defense Forces. Unleash your power as you learn the moves and skills of Krav Maga!

My Jewish/Israeli Food Experience

The best way to get to know Israel is through its food. The flavors of Israeli cuisine represent the diversity of the Israeli and Jewish people, with influences coming from Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Learn about the importance of food culture in Israel, how Israeli food came to be, and make some of Israel's most iconic dishes in your own kitchen!

Understanding Israel through Graffiti

Israeli artists are known for using every medium imaginable to share their art with the world, and that includes public forums. Take a virtual graffiti tour of Israel, and see what the street art of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and other cities tells us about the pressure points in Israeli society today.

Jewish Summer Version

This series is a chance to choose your own adventure – the arts, STEM, and music are all at your fingertips this summer! Find the Jewish links to all of your favorite activities.

We Are the Jews

The Forward answers this question: How are Jewish Teens using TikTok? An eye-rolling girl gives a tour of her parents’ mezuza collection, a boy in a hoodie reenacts the ancient conquests of Jerusalem with reality TV dialogue, and a girl and her mom bicker over an Israeli soap opera they call “Schnitzel.” Express what is Jewish to you with Tik Tok.

Collaging

Unleash your inner artist and collage your story using things around your home. Create a visual representation from an assembly of different forms and materials - magazine and newspaper clippings, ribbons, paint, bits of colored or handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects.

Rap it Up! Or It’s a Rap

Get out of your comfort zone and learn to write and perform your own amazing rap. Not your thing, how about creating your own Spoken Word or Slam Poetry? If you like to write and perform this course will give you many outlets to express yourself during this unique time.

You Be the Designer

Do you like to draw and create your own fashions? What about making your own jewelry? Have fun creating your own line of clothing (just on paper) to share with others who enjoy this too. You can also create your own jewelry collection using wire and beads to wear and share with family and friends.

There’s a Trick Up My Sleeve

Who doesn’t like a good magic trick or card trick? Learn some magic, have fun with learning some card tricks and maybe even create your own tricks too.

Stop It

Have you ever wanted to create your very own stop motion video? Brainstorm ideas and then learn how to create a story board for your movie. What props will you need, what scenery will you create? Learn how to use your phone and a stop motion app to make your vision come to life.

Potions Class and More

Do you love to experiment, is there a mad scientist lurking inside of you? Join us and have some fun with science! Create some slime, make your very own lip gloss, create a real volcano in your kitchen. Work with items found in your home to create a unique invention out of your imagination.

Harry Potter and Jewish Values

It’s official – there is a Jewish wizard at Hogwarts! Astute readers of the Harry Potter series have long suspected Harry’s friend and ally Anthony Goldstein might be Jewish. Now author JK Rowling has confirmed the matter, tweeting “Anthony Goldstein. Ravenclaw. Jewish wizard.” The next day Ms. Rowling suggested the possibility of a minyan at Hogwarts: “Anthony isn’t the first Jewish student, nor is he the only one. I just have reasons for knowing most about him!” The major characters in Harry Potter often reflect core Jewish values. Let’s explore them!

The Photography Inside Us

Explore how photography tells the stories of the modern Jewish people. Then, take your camera/phone/device of choice and tell your own Jewish story to the world using your photography skills and storytelling capabilities.

Personal Development

This series is all about you. It’s a chance to delve into how your connection to Judaism and your personal identity intersect, and to do some self reflection + growth.  

Friendship during Coronavirus

We all need to connect – it’s of our most fundamental instincts and friendship is a core Jewish value. Being there for each other, especially in a time of need, is one of friendship’s most fundamental characteristics. That means now we need our friends more than ever, even if we have to be friendly from a distance. Greeting cards, string friendship bracelets, sidewalk chalk art will all be used to keep us supporting each other.
